QUEZON CITY — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) will start prohibiting old vehicles to ply on roads.
Recently, the Court of Appeals favored the plan of the DOTr to phase out old buses for the safety of the commuters.
The DOTr decided to continue the phase-out.
In fact, the department has already started the phase-out of 15-year old buses
“That’s really the reason why we want the phase-out of aging vehicles. And also, the secretary of transportation said, another important thing is the health of the citizens,” DOTr spokesperson Asec. Cherrie Mercado said.
Bus operators are prepared for the phase-out.
“Actually, the phase-out has long been an issue and we adopted it already even without the CA’s decision,” said Juliet de Jesus, bus operator.
On the other hand, the department will implement the same program for jeepneys next year to give operators more time to buy and change their unit.
The DOTr also said that taxi’s will also be included in the phase-out.
The department is encouraging all taxi operators to replace their units with new ones.
Old passengers ships and Ro-Ro are also included in the phase-out.
As of now, the DOTr has no plans to phase-out old private vehicles but this will be included in the following years to come.
The DOTr says that the President ordered that the phase-out will be implemented gradually to give chance for owners to buy a new unit.
This is the reason why the department will implement the phase out gradually.
“We hear the President giving directions to the Cabinet in the bigger picture of not displacing people without having any support or guidance for them in the transistion,” Asec. Mercado said.
The phase-out of old vehicles is part of the modernization program of the government.
