MANILA, Philippines — The House Committee on Public Information will do its best to pass the controversial Freedom of Information bill within the year.
According to the committee’s chairman, AST-Teachers party list rep. Antonio Tinio, chances of passing it in 17th Congress are big.
Especially since President Rodrigo Duterte himself, is supporting the bill and even issued Executive Order number 2 to expedite its implementation.
The lawmaker assures that this will not be a watered down version; unlike that of the past administration which Tinio’s group opposed.
“In the past, congress we voted no sa committee level on the substitute bill, because we thought there were far too many exceptions inserted in the so-called Malacañang version,” said Tinio.
In Senate, FOI bills have already been filed and waiting for the committee to start the hearing.
The FOI bill will allow people access to transactions of projects entered by the government. However, it excludes information that may compromise national security.
The first FOI bill was filed in congress 27 years ago and has not been enacted to this day. (GRACE CASIN/UNTV News and Rescue)
