DAMMAM,  KSA — President Rodrigo Duterte expressed his gratitude to King Salman of Saudi Arabia for the assistance that the Saudi Arabian government is extending to stranded Filipino workers across the kingdom.

Labor secretary Silvestre Bello III said, the king agreed to shoulder the airfare expenses of those who want to return home to the Philippines.

“If you want to go home, fine. It’s free because the king himself orders to shoulder the airfare. So, the president [Duterte] has sent a letter thanking the king for his gesture.” Bello said.

Bello said, President Duterte wants to personally thank the king once he visits Saudi Arabia.

“It’s up for the king as to when he will invite him [Duterte.] In the letter of the president, he expressed that he wanted to come to personally thank the king. That’s how our president cares for you.”

Sec. Bello said, the process of repatriation has been finalized in a meeting with his counterpart in the ministry of labor in Saudi Arabia.

“Our staff will coordinate with their counterpart in Saudi Arabia’s ministry of labor to process the assistance to our migrant workers,” Bello adds.

Aside from airfare, the king also ordered to waive the penalties for all expired passports and visa.

He also offered employment opportunities to Filipino workers who wish to stay in the country.

Over 400 stranded OFW’s have signified their intention to come home while others prefer to stay and seek new employment with other companies.

Meanwhile, Sec. Bello has arrived in Jeddah to visit 17 camps of stranded OFW’s before returning to the Philippines tomorrow. — Maybelle Razon / UNTV News & Rescue
