QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The ‘Buwan ng Wika’ is celebrated each year simultaneously with the commemoration of the birth and death anniversary of the late president Manuel Luis Quezon.

Although President Quezon had many contributions such as the development of our economy, agrarian reform, education and social justice system in the country, for Filipinos, his most remarkable contribution is the promotion of our national language.

The late president Manuel L. Quezon is also known as the father of the Philippine national language. Even in this generation, the leaders of our country would want to convey the importance of the richness of our language and nation which had been liberated from the hands of the conqueror decades ago.

In effect of the Commonwealth Act No. 184 of the 1935 Constitution, Quezon declared that “Tagalog” be the national language of the Philippines.

In April 1940, he ordered the publishing of a dictionary and a grammar book of the national language in all private and public schools in the country.

“He intensely emphasized the importance of having a national language from different dialects of the country which included the Spanish and English language,” said National Historical Commission of the Philippines’ chairperson, Maria Serena Diokno.

Concurrent with the commemoration of the birth anniversary of the late president Quezon today are the exhibits at the Quezon Museum at Quezon Memorial Circle, Quezon City.

At the museum, his works and the events in the history of the Philippines during the time of the Commonwealth government are displayed.

“I come here every year ever since I started as a congressman in 1992. Every Quezon Day, I come here,” Rep. Sonny Belmonte said.
