The vicinity of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Villamor, Pasay City is one of the areas within Metro Manila that perennially suffers from heavy traffic
and this is one of the reasons why the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has launched the Premium Airport Bus Service.

The Premium Airport Bus Service was introduced to address the growing number of passengers at airports.

Based on the study conducted by the Manila International Airport Authority, the population of airport passengers has increased from 5 to 6 percent or equivalent to 2 million passengers compared to 2014 record.

The premium bus is designed to transport passengers to and from NAIA terminals.

The transportation department believes that this will be significant in lessening the volume of vehicles travelling along airports.

“What we are adressing here is the comfort of the riding public. We are also addressing decongestion. If there are thirty passengers, we can only use one bus. Unlike if they are going to travel with their own vehicles,” DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade said.

Each bus has a 24-seating capacity but can carry a hundred passengers.

The fare ranges from 150-300 pesos for each passenger depending on their destination.

Some of their pick-up and drop-off points include Makati City, Roxas Boulevard, New Port City and City of Dreams.

The modern bus also features global positioning system or GPS and mobile tracking application to identify the exact location of the bus to avoid the long wait of the passengers.

It also has Wi-Fi and CCTV cameras.

Currently, the premium bus is using an E-ticketing system. But the transportation department is planning to introduce an online booking system to make it more convenient for passengers.

As of now, there are 21 premium buses unit that are already operational. But there are still additional 28 units expected to be completed before the end of this year.

DOTr hopes that this project will help ease traffic since holiday season is approaching and influx of passengers is expected.

“I am hoping that this experiment will change the views of our people. Before, they just dont want to ride the buses because it’s hot and congested. They even dont want to ride jeepneys because it is uncomfortable,” Tugade said. — Joan Nano | UNTV News & Resuce
