MANILA, Philippines — The family of hazing victim Horacio Castillo III met with Justice Sec. Vitaliano Aguirre earlier Thursday.

Aguirre said the family thanked the Department of Justice (DOJ) for its efforts to solve the case.

There was an ongoing investigation by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) ordered by Aguirre.

DOJ has also placed 20 persons of interest under the immigration watch list.

Secretary Aguirre also explained to the family about the release of hazing suspect, John Paul Solano.

“I explain to them that in the assessment of our NPS, which is also shared by some senators, that the case is really not inquestable. So I explained to them, that’s the reason why he was released. But I told them they should not worry because the hearing will be speedy,” Aguire said.

The family also sought Aguirre’s assistance to set a meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte.

It was granted and the President will have an audience with them on Wednesday next week.

“I think they just wanted to seek the help of our president in getting justice and to prevent miscarriage of justice because they know the suspects are wealthy and influential,” Aguirre said.

Aguirre maintained, Atio’s death will be given justice despite the release of Solano.

It’s just that Solano has to be released because under the law, there is no reason to detain him for now.

The preliminary investigation on the case will begin Wednesday next week. – Roderic Mendoza | UNTV News & Rescue
