MANILA, Philippines — Thirteen senators have signed the consolidated bill seeking to prohibit political dynasties.
The senators who signed the bill are senators Franklin Drilon, Risa Hontiveros, Loren Legarda, Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, Grace Poe, Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito, Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino, Maria Lourdes “Nancy” Binay, Sonny Angara, Ralph Recto, Leila De Lima, Sherwin Gatchalian, and Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan.
The Senate Bill No. 1765 or the Anti-Political Dynasty Act of 2018 states that relatives of incumbent government officials can no longer run for public office.
The prohibition covers second degree of consanguinity or affinity or spouses, siblings, parents or children of an elected official.
Sen. JV Ejercito believes the bill will surely undergo intense debate in the Senate.
“Meron kasing freedom of choice. Parang yung iba ang argument, yung dynasty only applies to those yung mga appointees ganyan,” said Ejercito.
