QUEZON CITY, Philippines – Vice President Leni Robredo on Friday, May 11, expressed “alarm in the strongest term” over the Supreme Court’s (SC) decision on the quo warranto petition that led to the ouster of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.

According to Robredo, the decision was a “blatant circumvention of the most sacred institution of the land” referring to the Philippine Constitution. She stressed that no other means can an impeachable officer be removed from office, such as the Chief Justice, but only by impeachment.

She added that the SC ruling “sets a very dangerous precedent that may seriously undermine the independence of the judiciary.”

She calls on the Filipino people to join her in “utmost vigilance” and “defend the judicial system.”

“As the second highest official of the land, let me assure you: the fight is not yet over. Let us support all moves to right this wrong, particularly given how close the vote was for a decision of such magnitude,” Robredo said in a statement. — Grace Casin | UNTV News & Rescue
