Solicitor General Jose Calida

Presidential Spokesperson Secretary Harry Roque defended Solicitor General Jose Calida against allegations of conflict of interest amid reports that his wife’s security agency bagged multi-million peso deals with four government agencies.

Roque supported Calida’s claim that the SolGen had resigned as chairman and president of said agency before assuming office in May 2016.

“My reading of the Constitution and the anti-graft law supports the conclusion made by the SolGen that there is no conflict of interest. He resigned all his corporate posts because he became SolGen,” Roque said.

He added that the accusations were likely perpetuated by Calida’s critics who still harbor a grudge against him for filing the quo warranto petition against ousted Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.

“Kayo naman, alam ninyo naman kung bakit lumalabas yang mga puna na yan kay SolGen Calida, Nanalo kasi siya sa quo warranto petition niya. Binabawian siya ng mga kalaban niya, nung mga nasaktan sa ruling ng quo warranto, obvious naman yan,” Roque said.

(You already know why these allegations against SolGen Calida have surfaced. It’s because he won his quo warranto petition. His critics who are still hurting over the quo warranto ruling. They want to get back at him. It’s obvious.) — UNTV News & Rescue
