Boracay Island
MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte will declare Boracay Island as a land reform area once its rehabilitation period is completed.
“I am declaring land Reform in the entire island of Boracay. Mag- usap na lang kami sa Congress (We’ll just discuss it in Congress). The entire island will be declared as land reform area…Boracay is still classified as forest and agricultural. So if you are building a house there or somewhere, I am sorry we will just have to make some adjustments,” the President explained.
The President will assign a portion of Boracay for commercial use and maintain its tourism.
“Sagarin na natin (Let’s go all the way). Give it to the people but I don’t mind Congress…I would just suggest that if you really want to maintain the commercial quality of that place maybe you can cut strip…Bigyan mo sila ng easement na (give them easement of ) about 30 meters,” he said.
Special Assistant to the President assured that the President will issue the directive the soonest. Boracay residents have yet to react on the President’s plan. – Aiko Miguel
