MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) assured that all flood control projects in Metro Manila are ready for the onset of the rainy season.
DPWH National Capital Region (NCR) Director Melvin Navarro said they have already completed some of the major flood control projects namely the Maysilo Drainage System in Mandaluyong City; the Blumentritt Flood Interceptor project; and the latest drainage project at the stretch of Padre Burgos Avenue in Manila City.
“Makikita natin ngayon how effective it is para dito this coming rainy season… Expectedly dapat wala na tayong mararanasang sanang baha ngayon na grabe dito sa tapat ng Manila City Hall,” Navarro said.
(We will see this coming rainy season how effective it is. It is expected to eliminate cases of severe flooding in front of Manila City Hall.)
Although the drainage project along España Avenue in Manila is still under construction, DPWH is confident it will help reduce flood water in the area easily.
“Sa ngayon dahil meron na tayong mga nagawang drainage na maghatak ng tubig diyan so yung receding time noong tubig baha ay mabilis na ngayon,” Navarro explained.
(Now that we have created several drainage that will siphon water from the area, floodwater should recede faster.)
DPWH’s main concern, for now, is the clogging of waste materials in Metro pumping stations. Navarro said they usually collect up to three truckloads of garbage from pumping stations every day.
The director calls on the public to always practice proper waste segregation and disposal.
“Panawagan sana sa lahat na huwag magtapon ng basura sa ating nga daanan ng tubig para hindi ito makakasira sa ating mga pumps,” he concluded.
