MANILA, Philippines – Some non-governmental organizations continue to appeal for the immediate passage of the proposal known as the Zero Hunger Bill.
This aims to address the country’s problem on hunger in a span of 10 years.
“That will respond and guarantee the right to adequate food of all Filipinos,” said Aurea Miclat-Teces, president of the Food-First Information and Action Network (FIAN) Philippines.
The bill is still pending in the Senate committee while the Lower House has approved it in the second and final reading.
The Commissioner Gwendolyn Pimentel-Gana of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) said the agency supports this call.
“There would be remedies how to go about in demanding that these rights will be fulfilled by the government,” she said.
The chairperson of the Consultative Committee on Charter Change, former Chief Justice Reynato Puno also reiterated that it is important for the rights to education, health, and housing to be included in the new bill of rights.
When this happens, the public can demand services from the government that will ensure adequate food for every Filipino as part of the right to health.
“The Congress shall have the duty to create laws as part of progressive realization of these rights,” he concluded. – Rosalie Coz
