Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director General Oscar Albayalde

QUEZON CITY, Philippines – Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director General Oscar Albayalde has banned the presentation of arrested suspects before members of the media.

Albayalde announced the directive on Tuesday, June 12, in consideration of the suspects’ human rights as stated in a National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) order in 2008.

PNP Spokesperson, PSSupt. Benigno Durana said Albayalde’s order applies to all police stations nationwide as well as provincial and regional police offices.

“Nakikinig ang ating PNP sa pamumuno ni Gen. Albayalde sa mga comments, criticisms, suggestions ng ating mamamayan,” Durana said.

(The PNP under the leadership of  Gen. Albayalde listens to the comments, criticisms and suggestions of ordinary citizens.)

Durana stressed that anyone who would violate the directive would face appropriate administrative charges.

“I hope that all 1,300 plus police stations all over the county, 17 regional police offices, 83 plus provincial offices ay natanggap na nila yun (have received the directive) otherwise, they will be administratively sanctioned,” he added.

Durana clarified that no one influenced Albayalde to re-implement the ban of presentation of suspects before the media. However, he admitted that such directive was prompted by the conversation between the PNP Chief and Manila Archbishop Antonio Tagle regarding the rule of law and human rights. – Lea Ylagan / Marje Pelayo
