MANILA, Philippines – Many Filipinos are still satisfied with how democracy works in the country based on the latest Social Weather Stations survey (SWS).
According to the Pollster, 78 percent of Filipinos are satisfied with the country’s democracy in the second quarter of the year, a drop of two points from 80 percent in June last year.
Meanwhile, 60 percent of Filipinos still prefer democracy among other systems of government while 19 percent wants authoritarian rule.
The survey was taken through interviews with 1,200 respondents all over the country from March 13 to 28.
In his message for the anniversary of the Independence Day on Tuesday, June 12, President Rodrigo Duterte said he hopes for everyone to build that courage to defend the present democracy and its importance in the years to come. This is also a way to cherish the sacrifices our forefathers made for the liberty that we enjoy today.
The chief executive also appealed to the public to combat corruption, illegal drugs and criminality that impede the country’s progress. Likewise, the President called on everyone to stand firm in creating a better future for all Filipinos regardless of status in life.
“Today, we honor and remember the patriots who have given their lives in the name of liberty and freedom. As heirs of this great sacrifice, let us all be worthy of their legacy by leaving behind a nation. If we do not prepare our country financially, politically, environmentally, tandaan ninyo ang sinabi ko (remember what I said). I’m thankful that I’ve said it in a very important place – Kawit, Cavite – where our nation was founded,” Duterte said.
Before his speech, some hecklers welcomed the President in the said event. However, Duterte maintained that he respects the militants’ freedom of expression and instructed the police on the ground to exercise maximum tolerance.
“I will understand…Our Constitution guarantees freedom of the press, freedom of assembly and free expression. So I would just advise the law enforcement to just deal with them peacefully and the maximum tolerance,” he advised the PNP. – Rosalie Coz
