QUEZON CITY, Philippines – Transport network companies (TNCs) will now have to relinquish its power to set its own fares following the release of a new order signed by Transportation Department Secretary Arthur Tugade.

The new memo nullifies DOTR orders 2015 and 2017 as it grants the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) full authority to set and regulate fares among transport network vehicle service providers.

“LTFRB will ensure consumer protection and fair competition with the authority given by the department order authorizing LTFRB to regulate and supervise TNCs and TNVS,” said LTFRB Board Member Atty. Aileen Lizada.

TNVS drivers are in favor of the order but asks LTFRB to be reasonable in setting the fares.

“Kapag sila na po itong magse-set ng fare sana ma-regulate nila ng maayos, matignan nila iyong pinaka nararapat na matanggap ng mga driver na pamasahe,” said TNVs driver Menandro Basilio.

(Hopefully [LTFRB] will be able to regulate fares properly and impose the appropriate amount that drivers should receive.)

Grab Philippines Head, Brian Cu, meanwhile assured that they will comply with the rules imposed by the LTFRB and DOTR though they have yet to receive a copy of the order.
