MANILA, Philippines — For the third time, UNTV will hold a rescue summit to be participated by rescuers from different regions in the country.

The summit this July 11 will be different as it will open a competition for the most skilled and fastest-rescue teams that can respond to various scenarios, especially the Big One or a major earthquake.

“Kung dito nga naman mangyayari yun (major earthquake), we cannot expect na taga-dito pa rin. Tayo-tayo pa rin ang magtutulungan regarding that. We have to depend on the help from outside,” said BMPI-UNTV  Vice President for admin and external affairs Gerry Panghulan.

(If the ‘Big One’ hits us, we cannot expect help to come from here also. We have to help each other regarding that. We have to depend on help from outside.)

UNTV Rescue Summit is among the public service projects spearheaded by BMPI-UNTV President and CEO Daniel Razon, who also pioneered the rescue training effort for its news reporters and personnel.

Major cash prizes await the winning rescue groups apart from the experience and opportunity to improve their abilities.

“Alam mo naman si Kuya Daniel pag nag-isip ng proyekto lagi gusto niya kasi ma-improve ang capabilities ng mga team na sasali para sa kanila rin,” said Panghulan.

(You know how Kuya Daniel thinks. When he comes up with a project, he wants to make sure that the capabilities of participating teams will also improve. It’s for their own good.)

But even without monetary incentives, participating rescue teams view the event as essential in enhancing their skills and knowledge in saving lives.

“Kasi dito, hindi po ang kompetisyon ang tinitignan naming kundi yung mga natutunan po namin. Mas marami kami natutunan tsaka yung camaraderie na nakikilala namin mga kapwa namin rescuers. Mas mabilis response namin,” said PDRRMO Nueva Vizcaya training head  Jennelyn Hernandez.

(We’re not looking to win the competition but rather what we can learn from it. We learn a lot and we enjoy the  camaraderie as we get to know our fellow rescuers.  We respond faster now.)

“Napakahalaga ng ginagawa ng UNTV ngayon lalo na sa aming mga responders upang mas lalo kami matuto o di kaya’y mas lalo kaming maging ready pagdumating ang the Big One,” said PDRRMO Isabela training head Robert Umoso.

(UNTV’s initiatives are so valuable especially in training responders to be more alert when the Big One comes.)  — Mon Jocson | UNTV News & Rescue
