QUEZON CITY, Philippines – Cellphones and other gadgets are strictly prohibited among inmates inside detention facilities across the country.
In fact, visitors are also barred from bringing communication devices when entering jail premises. That’s why police on duty at the Philippine National Police (PNP) Custodial Center in Camp Crame are now being investigated over an alleged “jail anniversary selfie” post by detained former Senator Bong Revilla.
PNP Spokesperson PSSupt. Benigno Durana said the PNP Headquarters Support Service is now conducting investigation as to how Revilla was able to acquire a cellular phone. He assured that appropriate sanctions will be applied to policemen who will be proven to have connived with the senator or his visitors for the entry of the gadget.
“Relief and at the same time neglect of duty. How serious is it? It could be determined by our investigators (but) administrative case, definitely,” Durana said.
Meanwhile, Durana was quick to deny lax security inside the custodial center, adding that authorities are actually doing regular surprise inspections twice a week and they do not apply special treatments.
Durana confirmed that Revilla’s cellular phone was confiscated during a surprise inspection earlier today by the members of the HSS.
Meanwhile, Revilla’s wife, Bacoor Mayor Lani Mercado, stood in defense of her husband, saying that the Facebook account where the photo was posted was not Revilla’s.
“Iyong Facebook account po na yan ay may administrator. Hindi po iyan si Sen. Bong Revilla so wala po talaga syang access sa telepono at sa loob, dahil ipinagbabawal. Kung itinatanong po ninyo kung ano iyang picture na yan, iyan po ay lumang litrato po iyan,” Mercado explained.
