MANILA, Philippines – Repair works are expected today for the damaged portion of the Otis Bridge in Barangay 831, Manila following a partial collapse of its 10-meter stretch along P.M. Guanzon Street early Tuesday morning (June 26).
Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Manila District Engineer Mike Macud explained the bridge has been a subject of repair since 2015 due to aging. Since it is already an old infrastructure, Macud said it could no longer hold heavy vehicles considering the fact that its load limit is up to15 tons only.
The 10-month repair period has been approved in 2015 and the fund amounting to P37 million pesos is on hand.
“Ito pong Otis Bridge was fully funded po ito since 2016. Mayroon lang po talaga na nakaka-hindrance po sa atin. Iyong mga requirement na paglilipat ng mga poste ng Meralco at the same time ito po iyong naka-paralyze po noong project natin diyan sa Skyway,” explained Macud.
He added that the collapse somehow resulted in something positive as they may now begin the repair of the bridge.
Macud said they just need the go signal from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Traffic Safety Engineer before they begin the rehabilitation works preferably today which they expect to finish before the year ends.
