MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Judges Association (PJA) has recommended to President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday (July 13) Supreme Court (SC) Administrator Midas Marquez as replacement of Associate Justice Presbitero Velasco Jr. who is retiring on August 8.
“We believe that Court Administrator Marquez possesses the necessary qualifications and experience, having been in the service of the Supreme Court for almost three decades in various positions,” the PJA said in a letter to the President dated July 9, 2018.
The recommendation came amid allegations of questionable disbursements by Marquez for an SC project that was jointly funded by the World Bank (US$21.9 million) and the Philippine government (US$2.5 million).
Marquez, in his response to the complaint filed by Rizza Joy Laurea, said the accusations were baseless and recycled.
Marquez is included in the shortlist of candidates submitted by the Judicial Bar Council (JBC) together with Court of Appeals Associate Justices Jose Reyes Jr., Apolinario Bruselas Jr., Rosmari Declaro-Carandang, Ramon Hernando, Ramon Garcia, and Amy Lazaro-Javier as well as former Ateneo College of Law Dean Cesar Villanueva. – UNTV News and Rescue
