QUEZON CITY, Philippines — It seems Congressman John Bertiz is stuck in a quicksand — the more he speaks, the deeper he sinks.
While still in hot water for breaching airport security protocol and bullying a security officer, the ACTS-OFW party-list representative drew flak again over his “offensive” remarks about women’s monthly ordeal.
Bertiz, while explaining his side on the airport incident, insensitively compared his actions to a woman going through her menstrual period.
“For the past three years that I’ve been a member of Congress, once a year na medyo dapuan po tayo ng monthly period. Tao lang po na marupok. Umiinit ang ulo. Nai-i-stress din sa trabaho (For the past three years that I’ve been a member of Congress, once a year I go through something like a monthly period. I’m only human; weak and hot-headed. I get stressed out over work too),” he said.
Women’s group Gabriela party-list slammed Bertiz for his statement saying he shouldn’t put the blame on women just to justify his actions.
“Kaming mga babae ay walang problema sa regla, ang isyu ay ang arogansya niya (Women have no problem with menstruation. The issue here is his arrogance). Women should not be stereotyped as arrogant and entitled during their menstrual period,” Gabriela Rep. Emmie De Jesus said in a statement. — Marje Pelayo (with reports from Grace Casin)
