Another water price hike is set to welcome consumers in 2019.
West zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc (Maynilad) will increase their rates by P1.95 while east zone concessionaire Manila Water Company will hike theirs by P1.54, said Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System chief regulator Patrick Ty.
Ty explained that the price hike is based on the 5.7 percent inflation rate last July.
“Based on the concession agreement, the two concessionaires are allowed to do an annual inflation adjustment based on the concession agreement. It’s the inflation rate as of July that will be the one used for purposes of any adjustment in January 1 the following year,” Ty said.
For Maynilad residential customers who consume 10 cubic meters (cu.m.) of water a month, the adjustment will translate to an increase of P5.30 in their monthly water bill. Those consuming 20 cu.m. and 30 cu.m. will see an increase of P20.80 and P41.02 respectively in their monthly bills.
Meanwhile, residential customers of Manila Water who consume 10 cu.m. of water a month will see an increase of P3.34 in their monthly water bill. Those who consume 20 cu.m. and 30 cu.m. a month will see an increase of P7.39 and P15.01 in their bills, respectively.
Ty assured that these water rate adjustments went through proper computation.
He also appealed to the public to conserve water and practice recycling so as not to be burdened by price hikes. — Grace Casin | UNTV News & Rescue
