ALBAY, Philippines – The Philippine National Police (PNP) in the municipal town of Daraga will review its deployment of security personnel following a series of high-profile crimes in the area.
According to Daraga Police Chief PSupt. Dennis Balla, they plan to intensify police visibility in the area and closely monitor their personnel on the ground to ensure that they perform well in their specific areas of jurisdiction.
Likewise, Balla said, they will strengthen their ties with the members of the community particularly with the barangay officials as they are the ones closer to the public.
“Sila ang unang dapat makakapag-report sa atin if in case may nahahalata silang dyan sa mga lugar nila na kakaiba. Sana po ipagbigay alam sa amin para ma-aksyonan din agad kasi partnership ang kailangan natin,” he said.
It was in July this year when Radio Broadcaster Joey Llana was gunned down while disembarking from the house garage in Barangay Peñafrancia in Daraga.
Six months after, another member of the media Celso Amo was stabbed to death at a covered court in Barangay San Roque, also in Daraga.
The latest was the assassination of Ako Bicol Party list Rep. Rodel Batocabe while hosting a gift-giving activity for senior citizens and persons with disability (PWD) in Barangay Burgos just days before the year ends.
These high-profile crimes definitely caused fear among the residents in Daraga, said Klen Buenaflor. A local tricycle driver for 18 years now.
Just like his co-drivers, Klen said he chooses to park early in the afternoon nowadays so as not to get involve in crimes on the street.
“Katulad ng mga civilian wala naman iyong kinalaman sa problemang ganyan. Nadadamay sila. Natatakot din kami nyan kapag ganyan. Kaya kapag minsan gumagarahe din kami ng maaga,” he said.
