BULACAN, Philippines – The blue waters of Angat Dam indicate that there is still enough water to last for months and that it is still able to release some for the shortage-hit Metro Manila.
As of Friday (March 15), the water level in Angat Dam is at 199.25 meters, about 20 meters more than the critical level of 180 meters.
The dam has three spilling gates which are opened only during the rainy season if the dam requires spillage.
According to the National Water Resources Board (NWRB), there is no decision yet to increase their allocation to Metro Manila and for irrigation in Bulacan and Pampanga.
“Sa tingin po natin yung regular na alokasyon na ibinibigay ng NWRB para water supply sa Metro Manila at irigasyon ay kasalukuyan po ay natutugunan naman natin, (We believe the NWRB is still able to supply the regular allocation to Metro Manila and for irrigation,)” explained NWRB Executive Director Sevillo David.
Angat Dam releases four billion liters of water to Maynilad and Manila Water each day which supplies almost 96% of raw water requirement of the entire Metro Manila.
Opposite the 131 meter-dike is the 218 megawatts hydro-electric power plant.
From it, water flows downstream to Ipo Dam and to La Mesa Dam in Quezon City.
President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday (March 15) directed the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) to demand Manila Water and Maynilad to release water supply from Angat Dam that will be good for 150 days.
The state weather bureau PAGASA earlier said that as long as the water level in Angat Dam remains above 180 meters, the needed supply in Metro Manila would remain manageable. – Marje Pelayo (with details from Rey Pelayo)
