MANILA, Philippines – A tropical depression may enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Saturday evening or early Sunday morning, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
If it enters PAR, it will be locally named “Chedeng.”
According to PAGASA, the weather disturbance was last spotted 1,505 kilometers East of Mindanao this morning.
It packed maximum sustained winds of up to 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 60kph. It is moving westward at the speed of 20kph.
PAGASA said scattered to at times widespread heavy rains may be experienced over provinces in the eastern section of Mindanao on Monday and Tuesday due to the weather disturbance.
While unlikely, the state weather bureau also said it may possibly make a landfall over the eastern part of Davao Oriental in Mindanao either on Monday or Tuesday.
The tropical depression may also weaken to a low pressure area before it hits the landmass.
PAGASA advised residents in areas prone to flooding and landslides to continue monitoring for weather updates. – Robie de Guzman
