Fishing season in the Davao Gulf will be closed beginning June 1 according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) region XI.
This is done annually to ensure sufficient supply of various fishes.
On Saturday (June 1), BFAR will set a fishing ban on round scads, karabalyas (short mackerel), and matang baka (pursed-eye scad).
“No Bagnet operators, No Ringnet operators bakasyon muna, (No bagnet operators and ringnet operators, vacation time) ” according to BFAR XI Regional Director Fatma Idris.
The BFAR Fishery Protection and Law Enforcement Group has already been deployed to monitor the municipal waters. Meanwhile, BFAR XI assured there is enough supply of fish in the region.
“Maski may closed season supisyente, mayroong stock kagaya ng rice mayroon tayong stock na nandyan naka-standby na mga fish imported na comparable naman ang presyo, (Despite the closed season, there is sufficient stock. Similar to rice, we also have stock fishes. There are imported fish on stand by and it has comparable pricing)” Idris said.—(with reports from Janice Ingente)
