MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte is carefully weighing his decision on whether to sign or not the Security of Tenure Bill.
The proposed legislation will lapse into law if the President fails to sign it on Saturday (July 27).
“If the President feels that signing the law will create not beneficial effects to the major players, he might consider vetoing it. But if he doesn’t feel that way, he will sign that into law,” explained Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo.
“Ganun naman si Presidente. Hindi pa natin alam (That’s how the President decides. We never know but) he’s just open to all,” Panelo added.
Labor groups are expecting the passage of the bill as they believe it would help end contractualization or short term employment practice in the country.
However, business groups and employers’ sector has been appealing to the President to veto the said proposal noting its adverse impact on the country’s economy and the labor force. – with details from Rosalie Coz
