MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Police (PNP) is ready to handle whatever activities the protesters in the 29th anniversary celebration of the EDSA People Power are planning for tomorrow, February 25.
PNP-PIO chief P/CSupt. Generoso Cerbo Jr. said that they are at a heightened alert status in Metro Manila to secure the condition of the visitors against lawless elements.
“Be assured that we have a good security plan for tomorrow Feb. 25,” Cerbo said.
The general added that they do not prohibit rallies and protests as part of the activities tomorrow as long as they are held inside the freedom park.
Cerbo said that they respect the groups’ rights for speech and expression.
“If they hold this at private places, of course they must ask permission from the owners and if they will hold this at public places like in the streets, we require permit from concerned local government units,” he said.
Cerbo also said that, on their part, the officers of AFP and PNP will have a unity walk at 10am from Camp Crame to the People Power Monument.
He said that it is already a tradition to star ranks in the PNP and AFP and they do this yearly.
This will be followed by a wreath laying at 11am and a mass at 12:15pm at the EDSA Shrine, which will also be attended by the President.
As for the coup d’état rumors, the PNP spokesman reiterated that they remain vigilant although they have not monitored anything related to such. (Lea Ylagan / UNTV News)
