Judiciary Magis played how a defending and two-time UNTV Cup champion should, as they waylaid the Senate Defenders, 77-59 in the second round eliminations of UNTV Cup Season 4 at Ynares Sports Arena.

UNTV Cup, the Public Service Channel’s basketball league where cash prizes are donated to charities is led by multi-awarded broadcaster and Mr. Public Service Daniel Razon.

Magis entered the 4th period with just a four point lead, 51-47 but the defending champion stamped its class in the final 10 minutes to outclass the Defenders, missing the services of Kenneth Duremdes who was serving a one-game suspension because of a disqualifying foul from their last assignment.

Incidentally, Senate came into the game naming Mike Fermin as their new head coach while Duremdes will now focus as a player alone. But without the former PBA MVP on the hardcourt, Defenders had a problem matching up with the scoring aces of Judiciary.

Big man Don Camaso tallied 31 points; 10 out of 25 from the field; six out of 12 from three points; 11 boards and two steals to lead the Magis to their fourth consecutive week dating back from the 1st round eliminations, thereby strengthening their chance for a quarterfinal spot with an improved 4-3 slate.

Interestingly, the defending champion will face the team they beat in last season’s finals, the improved Malacañang Patriots this Sunday December 13, 4:30 pm also at Ynares.

The last time the Senate led in the game was when legislative staff Joe Garcia completed a 3-point play with a minute and 48 seconds left in the third period. Then Camaso and the rest of the Magis grabbed the upper hand again and never looked back.

Coach Mike Fermin’s team dropped to 3-4 mark and needs to win their last two games in the second round eliminations against AFP and MMDA to qualify in the quarterfinals.

Without Captain Marbel, Defenders relied on Marlon Legaspi and Emmanuel Baltazar’s combined effort of 44 markers and 20 rebounds. No other player from Senate finished double digit in scoring.

Defenders outscored Magis in the third canto, 26-13 but Judiciary came back in the final period winning the last 10 minutes in scoring, 26-12.
