PASAY CITY, Philippines — NAIA officially opened its new taxiway extension today.
One of the causes of ground traffic at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport is insufficient taxiways.
This can be compared to the congestion we experience on major thoroughfares in Metro Manila due to the limited number of roads.
Airplanes also experience heavy traffic at airports, and because of their large size, planes need wider and more efficient roads.
This is the problem facing Manila International Airport Administration, and reason for the construction of additional taxiways.
A taxiway is a road where an airplane runs before it reaches the main runway.
Earlier today, the new taxiway extension officially opened to help improve ground traffic at NAIA.
Before the construction, airplanes used to make 4 turns before taking off or reaching the terminal. Now, with the new taxiway extension, planes only need to make two turns.
MIAA sees the significant help of the extension in improving services offered by the airport.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines or CAAP, if the ground traffic improves flight delays will be reduced.
But MIAA admits this is not the ultimate solution to the delays. Airline companies must work hand-in-hand with them to address these issues.
“Yes, it will contribute to the reduction of delays but then it takes one and one to tango. The government is doing their part in order to make all the possible means in order to solve the delay, but at the same time, the airlines must also do their share,” said MIAA General Manager, Angel Honrado.
The new extension is expected to make ground operation much safer and more efficient before take-off.
Compared with the old taxiway which is made of asphalt, the new taxi way extension is made of solid concrete and is said to last for twenty years.
The construction of the new taxiway extension costs half a billion pesos and took two years to be completed. (MON JOCSON / UNTV News)
