PASAY CITY – Lawmakers have mixed opinions over the US$81 million money laundering activity being probed in senate.

Sen. Bam Aquino believes that the US$81 million laundered money from Bangladesh that has been traced to the country is indeed an embarrassment to the Philippines.

Sen. Aquino said, discussions on how the laundered money will be returned to Bangladesh only started during the third senate hearing.

For his part, Sen. Ralph Recto says it is important to return whatever is left of the laundered money to Bangladesh.

Sen. Recto explains that apart from the US$17 million still allegedly with Philrem and the US$10 million from Kim Wong, there is still about US$7 million laundered money that has been traced and can still be recovered from several casino accounts.

Meanwhile, Sen. Chiz Escudero said, this is the proper time to amend the anti-money laundering law especially to protect the welfare of the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who have huge contributions to the country’s economic growth. The amendment would protect the remittances of OFWs.

For his part, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano argued that the investigation on money laundering should be given to specific government agencies other than the senate to avoid issues of politicking.

Sen. Cayetano believes it is necessary to further strengthen the capabilities of the said investigative bodies to resolve money laundering cases in the country.
