The Human Rights Victims’ Claims Board (HRVCB) remains in service after President Benigno Aquino III signed Republic Act No. 10766 extending the board’s term to two more years.

At present, about 11,700 applications have been screened and around 75,000 more still needs to be scrutinized.

These will be divided among members of the board in order to derive an appropriate decision.

“Some averments are very general. No details, even the witnesses they presented have not much detail. This concerns abuse in human rights of the people. That’s why we are very careful,” Lina Sarmiento said, chairperson of HRVCB.

They are screening the documents and evidences one by one to ensure protection from opportunistic claimants.

They have categorized the applications based on the similarity of cases.

“We discovered claimants who submitted the same documents. We noticed that the same documentary stamp was used in different claimants. So, there really are false claimants,” Sarmiento declared.

The assessment must be finished first for all legitimate applicants before the P10 billion cash can be distributed to the victims of Martial Law during the regime of the late president Ferdinand Marcos.

The amount of claim will depend on the gravity of abuse experienced by the victim.

Compensation for deceased victims may be availed by the relatives.
