Malacañang is carefully deliberating on the statement it is about to release regarding the decision of the Permanent Court of Arbitration which favored the Philippines over its maritime case against China.
Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella says, the Philippine government will soon announce its next move at the end of the 11th Asia-Europe meeting in Mongolia.
“We are now keeping our cards close to our chest. We are really thinking through the right response. But the initial statement should be sometime after DFA Secretary Yasay comes back from Mongolia,” Abella told reporters.
Secc. Abella adds that the welfare of the Filipino fisherfolks will still be part of the official response of the Philippines.
At this point, Malacañang says, the government is cautioning the fisherfolks to be careful when sailing to the disputed islands
Meanwhile, during his speech at the ASEM meeting, Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay emphasized that the decision of the arbitration court is an important contribution in addressing disputes in the South China Sea and calls on all parties to exercise restrain and sobriety.
He also reiterated the country’s commitment to pursue the peaceful resolution of disputes.
