The Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) will have to spend 15 to 20 million pesos for the demolition of illegal fishpen and fish cages in Laguna Lake.

LLDA General Manager Neric Acosta said in an interview on the talkshow Get It Straigh with Daniel Razon, around 2,000 hectares of fish cages and fishpen in Laguna Lake need to be removed.

The carrying capacity of the lake for fishpen and fish cages is only 9,000 hectares but it has now reached more than 12,000 hectares.

Acosta said, they cannot remove all the structures in the lake because the fishery in the area is a major source of fish supply in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

LLDA is earning around 100 million pesos from permits and other fees from the fishery.

The inclusion of the lake in President Duterte’s sona has increased their collection.

There is also a plan to turn the eastern section of the lake into an ecotourism site.

“All structures will be removed. It will be like Lake Geneva, Lake Michigan. There’s area recreation. It’s tourism, the navigational use of the lake,” Acosta said.

In September, LLDA will laydown the whole program on the rehabilitation of the lake. — Rey Pelayo / UNTV News & Rescue
