CALOOCAN CITY, Philippines – Voters in the country’s largest barangay, Bagong Silang, Caloocan, struggled to get things done during the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections on Monday, May 14.
During the first hours of the election, inquiries bombarded the Commission on Elections (Comelec) help desks at Bagong Silang Elementary School, the barangay’s main polling center, as eager voters line up to clarify their precinct numbers and search for their missing names.
As expected, senior citizens were the most affected by the process; though their determination did not waver.
“Hanggat may kaya (As long as I am able),” said 78-year old voter Emiia Samin
“Simula kay Marcos wala akong palya ng pagboto (Since the time of Marcos I have never failed to vote),” said another senior citizen, 74-year old Adelaida Belardo
Barangay Bagong Silang has a population of at least 300,000 based on 2015 National Census. It has 92,000 registered voters on the voter’s list that’s why 170 public teachers, with some from nearby barangays Gabriela and Sto. Nino, rendered services in full force in today’s election.
Dr. Nimpa Narcise, the school’s principal said only two teachers did not report to their election duties due to health concerns.
Narcise admitted the construction of a new school building caused delays in the overall election process.
“Ang iba pong mga botante ay medyo nahirapan silang hanapin dahil may mga construction nga po tayo ng building (Some voters had a hard time locating it because of the construction works on a new building.) ,” Narcise said.
Nevertheless, the school management assured that voters were provided with guide map and services by active help desk officers for assistance. – Rey Pelayo | UNTV News & Rescue
