QUEZON CITY, Philippines – The Philippine National Police (PNP) has warned policemen practicing bounty hunting.
“Bounty hunters” are people who capture fugitives or criminals for monetary reward.
PNP Public Information Office (PIO) Chief PSSupt. Benigno Durana emphasized that though running after wanted persons are part of their mandate, there is no such job as a “bounty hunter” in the PNP.
“Walang trabahong ganoon. Kumbaga, pang-pelikula lang iyan dahil hindi iyan trabaho ng pulis. Ang trabaho ng pulis ay within human rights and the rule of law that is running after the wanted person. Iyong pagpatay is not the policy of the PNP,” said Durana in a briefing with reporters on Wednesday, June 6.
(There is no such job. It exists only in the movies; it’s not a job for cops. The police work within within human rights and the rule of law, which is running after the wanted person. Killing is not a policy of the PNP.)
Durana noted that they will not tolerate those who practice bounty hunting among their ranks.
He added that those guilty of the act will be punished accordingly emphasizing on the PNP’s intensified campaign against police scalawags.
“We will be hard against those police officers who will be found doing things that are beyond their normal function. Nakita ninyo naman na nagpa-file (tayo) ng criminal charges, may administrative charges (You know that we file criminal and administrative charges). Nakita natin na may (We have) 358 [policemen] right now being processed for dismissal from the service for involvement in illegal drugs,” he stressed. – Lea Ylagan / Marje Pelayo
