QUEZON CITY, Philippines – As promised, the Department of Agriculture has set suggested retail prices (SRP) for rice, fish, and other agricultural products which will take effect on Monday, June 25.
In an interview Friday, June 22, Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol said they limited the SRP to basic items while the agency is still assessing the SRP for other products.
Based on the initial SRP list, a kilogram of regular-milled rice will be priced at P39. For fish, Piñol said it will be P150 for a kilogram of milkfish; P100 for a kilogram of tilapia; and P140 for a kilogram of round scad or galunggong.
Meanwhile, the DA has also set SRPs for major spices such as red onion and garlic. The SRP for a kilogram of red onion will be P95 while for the white ones will be P75 per kilogram. For garlic, it will be P120 for a kilogram of locally produced while P70 for a kilogram of imported garlic.
The Agriculture Secretary said retailers should not exceed beyond 10% of the SRP in their prices of the mentioned products.
“Ang iniiwasan lang naman natin actually is the abnormal movement of prices in the market. We don’t want a situation where today its P100, tomorrow it’s going to be P150. So with the SRP now, hindi ka pwedeng mag-adjust ng presyo mo by over 10%. Because if you do that, that will be profiteering. And you could be charged or jailed if you are caught and convicted with profiteering. It’s a crime,” the Secretary explained.
Those who will violate the SRP will be penalized of up to P1 million fine and will be charged under the Anti-Profiteering Law.– Rey Pelayo / Marje Pelayo
